About Dr. Vafa Shayani
Dr. Shayani completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1984. He subsequently attended medical school and completed his residency in general surgery at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Following an additional year of specialized training in advanced laparoscopy, Dr. Shayani began his professional career at Loyola University Medical Center in 1996. During his tenure, he achieved the rank of Associate Professor of Surgery and served as the Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program before departing in 2007.
Since then, Dr. Shayani has been practicing as a General and Bariatric Surgeon in the Chicago metropolitan area. He is proud to be recognized in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors, as featured in Chicago Magazine.
Dr. Shayani is currently the Bariatric Medical Director at a leading bariatric program in the Chicago suburbs. He provides both endoscopic (implantation of gastric balloons) and surgical (sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric banding) procedures at UCM AdventHealth Bolingbrook Hospital, which has been recognized as a Bariatric Center of Excellence for many years.
A respected physician leader, Dr. Shayani has held numerous leadership positions at both local and national institutions and organizations. He is the past Chairman of Surgery and the current President of the Medical Staff at AdventHealth Bolingbrook Hospital. He has also served as the Past President of the Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons and the Past Chairman of the Membership Committee for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
